BERLIN (AP) — A former member of communist East Germany’s secret police has been charged with murder over the killing of a Polish national at a border crossing in divided Berlin in 1974, prosecutors said Thursday. The indictment against the 79-year-old man, whose name wasn’t released, was filed at the state court in the German capital. It relates to an incident on March 29, 1974, in which a 38-year-old Polish man took a fake bomb to the Polish Embassy to try to force an unhindered exit to West Berlin, prosecutors said in a statement.East Germany’s secret police, the Stasi, allegedly decided to feign authorizing the man’s exit. Its employees provided him with exit documents and accompanied him to a border crossing at the Friedrichstrasse railway station in East Berlin, prosecutors said. They said that the suspect, age 31 at the time, was tasked with rendering the Polish man “harmless.” After the Pole had passed the final checkpoint, the suspect allegedly shot him...‘Long live’ the Eras Tour — Taylor Swift’s concert film hits DC-area theaters Thursday

A look at what assistance it’s providing

WASHINGTON (AP) — Within hours of the horrific attack by Hamas, the U.S. began moving warships and aircraft to the region to be ready to provide Israel with whatever it needs to respond. A second U.S. carrier strike group departs from Norfolk, Virginia, on Friday. Scores of aircraft are heading to U.S. military bases around the Middle East. And special operations forces are now assisting Israel’s military in planning and intelligence. The buildup reflects U.S. concern that the deadly fighting between Hamas and Israel could escalate into a more dangerous regional conflict. So the primary mission for those ships and warplanes for now is to establish a force presence that deters Hezbollah, Iran or others from taking advantage of the situation. But the forces the U.S. sent are capable of more than that. The U.S. is also expediting the shipment of munitions and interceptors for Israel’s fight against Hamas.A look at what weapons and options the U.S. military could provide: WEA...Taylor Swift asiste al estreno de su película ‘Eras Tour’ en Los Ángeles

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysian budget carrier MYAirline abruptly suspended operations Thursday, citing financial pressures less than 11 months after it took to the skies. The announcement on social media caught many travelers by surprise and left thousands stranded as 40 flights were canceled. The airline apologized for the “extremely painful decision” but said “significant financial pressures” forced it to suspend operations pending an ownership restructuring and recapitalization of the company. “We have worked tirelessly to explore various partnership and capital raising options to prevent this suspension. Unfortunately, the constraints of time have left us with no alternative but to take this decision,” the airline’s board of directors said in their statement. The move came just days after the airline said it was in advanced stages of finalizing a strategic partnership. Local media reported that the suspension signaled that those talks may have collapsed. The airline ...Record Heat Ahead of a Fall Front this Weekend

Lots of changes are ahead over the next few days in South Florida as we go from record heat to below average, fall-like conditions by next week. It’s all thanks to a couple areas of low pressure near northern Florida this morning followed by a strong front developing near the Rocky Mountains. These lows near Florida will be the main influence on our weather pattern through Saturday. At least for today, it’s all about the heat as a slot of drier air filters into South Florida today, keeping rain chances low and providing more sunshine.High temperatures this afternoon will reach the low to mid 90s, which will be near records. Miami is forecast to hit 93F, which would break the record by 1F. The saving grace for today is that it will be breezy with wind gusts up to 30 mph, helping to take the edge off from the heat just a little bit.More heat and high humidity remains in place Friday and Saturday with temperatures potentially a degree warmer into the mid 90s.
