‘Ridiculous’ to rope Georgia into Western sanctions against Russia, PM says

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:55:00 GMT

Cracking down on trade between Georgia and Russia would have little impact on the Russian economy, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said Wednesday, pushing back against a proposal for the EU to sanction third countries that continue to do business with Moscow.“What the EU trades with Russia in four days, we trade with Russia in one year,” Garibashvili said in an interview at the Qatar Economic Forum.“When it comes to economic sanctions […] Georgia’s trade turnover with Russia is less than $1 billion” a year, the Georgian PM said. “This is ridiculous, isn’t it? That $1 billion could not affect Russian economy.”Russia is Georgia’s second largest trading partner. In 2022, trade turnover between the two countries reached $2.5 billion, according to preliminary data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia. The former Soviet republic is among a handful of countries from the Caucasus and Central Asia whose trade with Rus...

EU top court finds holes in Swiss cheese’s trademark request

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:55:00 GMT

The Swiss Emmental cheese, famous for its numerous holes, cannot be trademarked in the European Union, the Court of Justice of the EU ruled Wednesday.“The term ‘emmentaler’ cannot be protected as a European Union trade mark for cheeses,” the CJEU said in its ruling. The mark, the court argued, is “descriptive of a type of cheese for the relevant German public and is not perceived as an indication of the geographical origin of that cheese.”As such, “it does not enjoy protection as a collective mark,” the court ruled. Originally produced in the German-speaking Emme valley, in the Bern region, Emmental is one of the most well-known Swiss cheeses. In 2021, 10,772 tons of it were exported globally. The cheese has been produced under a protected designation of origin (AOP) in Switzerland since 2006, but lobby groups say it is widely copied abroad. The AOP is only valid within Switzerland, but has no jurisdiction in the EU. The CJEU’s ruling ...

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:55:00 GMT

GENEVA — World Health Organization member countries Wednesday voted in favor of a resolution condemning Russia’s continued war against Ukraine and its attacks on health care services, in a move that Russia claimed wrongly politicizes the organization. The symbolic vote at the ongoing World Health Assembly in favor of a resolution was backed by 80 countries, with 52 abstaining, nine voting against and 36 absent. Countries also rejected a counterresolution from Russia and Syria, with just 13 voting in favor. The rejection of Russia’s resolution was meant to “send a clear signal that provoking a health emergency of outstanding proportions and destruction of medical structures on a massive scale is not tolerated by this assembly and comes with a cost for the aggressor state,” Ukraine’s representative said during the meeting this week.  The WHO is typically neutral on political issues, preferring not to single out countries while condemning attacks on health ca...
