For whiter whites, try these tips from a stain pro

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:59:19 GMT

A Matterhorn-like mountain of household linens glided through the house as if moving under its own volition. The dogs watched warily. My husband stepped back, yielding the space. From deep inside the mound, a voice (mine) said, “I’m making our whites whiter.”I had just hung up the phone with Wayne Edelman, of Meurice Garment Care, a high-end New York-based cleaner with a high-end clientele that includes fashion houses, museums, private collectors and celebrities.“We clean priceless collections,” Edelman says, recalling the day Princess Di’s gowns arrived in an armored car.Not that I want to air my dirty laundry in public, but I will share that my whites are just not as white as they should be. I am pretty sure this is a character flaw.“Many people don’t understand that white is a color,” he tells me. “They think it’s the absence of color, and that all fabrics are white at their core. But white textiles are dyed white and fade like any other color.”“So, you’re saying I have unrealist...

Oregon Republicans end walkout that blocked myriad bills

By Andrew Selsky | Associated PressSALEM, Ore. — Enough Republican members showed up in the Oregon Senate on Thursday to end a six-week walkout that halted the work of the Legislature and blocked hundreds of bills, including some on abortion, transgender health care and gun safety. The boycott, which prevented the Senate from reaching a two-thirds quorum needed to pass bills, was prompted by a sweeping measure on abortion and gender-affirming care that Republicans said was too extreme. The walkout also blocked the approval of the two-year state budget and a gun-safety measure opposed by the GOP that would increase the purchasing age to 21 for semiautomatic rifles.GOP Minority Leader Sen. Tim Knopp had said the boycott would end only on the session’s last day — June 25 — to pass “bipartisan” legislation and budget bills. But an optimistic mood took over the Capitol this week as GOP and Democratic leaders met to negotiate compromises.“We asked for lawful, we aske...

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- It's been six weeks since Gov. Gavin Newsom deployed the California National Guard and California Highway Patrol into the drug-plagued Tenderloin neighborhood. Fentanyl seized by the state's task force revealed just how massive supplies flowing onto the streets of San Francisco actually are. A 2023 surge in fentanyl overdose deaths, unbridled open-air drug markets operating in plain sight, and overwhelmed San Francisco Police Department officers combined into one big crisis in the city.Using intelligence and analysis provided by the National Guard on major drug trafficking cartels, CHP officers scooped up enough fentanyl to potentially kill over 2.1 million people. All of that fentanyl was found within just the past six weeks, and before it could reach the hands of addicts, according to the Governor's Office. The FBI Is Hunting a New Domestic Terror Threat: Abortion Rights Activists

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 07:59:19 GMT

Following a concerted effort by Republicans to pressure law enforcement agencies to target activists supporting the right to abortion, the FBI dramatically increased its caseload on abortion-related “domestic terrorism.”Last year, as the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade sparked major protests nationwide, the FBI opened nearly 10 times as many investigations into cases of abortion-related domestic terrorism as it had in 2021, a new internal report reveals. While the report doesn’t say how many of these incidents were motivated by support for reproductive rights and how many were anti-abortion, the uptick follows calls by top Republicans in Congress for the bureau to pursue “pro-abortion terrorism.” “Pro-abortion terrorism is sweeping our nation,” Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., wrote in a column last June, lamenting that “only after the outcry from the pro-life community did the FBI announce an investigation” into Jane’s Revenge — a small group of activists that firebo...

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings reported for minicamp this week with a dress-up theme — sports jerseys — that came with a contest to award the most creative player. The assignment generated by quarterback Kirk Cousins spread through the entire organization, with roughly two-thirds of all staff wearing one to work on Tuesday — some current, some throwback, some random choices in between. “All Kirk’s idea,” Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said. “That was his whole deal, and the guys took it and ran with it.”Cousins chose a Georgetown-era Allen Iverson jersey. An assistant coach who wanted to needle his boss, whom O’Connell declined to name, found a replica of the head coach’s jersey from his college career at San Diego State. New Vikings cornerback Byron Murphy, in a head-to-toe Vancouver Grizzlies uniform featuring former point guard Mike Bibby, was declared the winner. Bibby happens to be Murphy’s uncle.Cousins has been taking small groups of teammates...
