'Several' more Antioch police officers put on leave this week during another investigation

(BCN) -- Antioch Mayor Lamar Thorpe said at a press conference Thursday that "several" police officers have been placed on administrative leave due to policy violations possibly exposed during a city investigation. Thorpe indicated the investigation is internal, unlike a current FBI/Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office probe, during which eight officers were suspended (one of whom has since resigned), for alleged civil rights violations and other possible crimes. Executive Director of the San Jose Police Officers’ Association charged with importing fentanyl Thorpe also wouldn't specify how many officers have been put on leave and said the possible policy violations likely weren't being investigated as crimes. "We have every intention of respecting confidentiality in the process," Thorpe said. "That being said, we're also not going to sweep these matters under the rug as we've done in the past." Thorpe, who wasn't accompanied by Police Chief Steven Ford, said ...New York Times Makes Glaring Error About Iraq War — Then Corrects It Incorrectly

For the 20th anniversary of the start of the Iraq War, the New York Times published an article by Max Fisher headlined “20 Years On, a Question Lingers About Iraq: Why Did the U.S. Invade?”The article is a fairly cogent summation of the evidence. However, when it was first published, it was undermined by an extremely significant and extremely funny mistake. After inquiries from The Intercept, the paper has changed the original mistake into a fresh, new mistake. Here’s how the article originally read:Mr. Hussein had ejected international weapons inspectors, which was seen in Washington as a humiliating policy failure for Mr. Clinton. When the American war leader was weakened by scandal later that year [in 1998], congressional Republicans pounced, passing the Iraq Liberation Act …One reason this is so funny is because in 1998 the Times accurately reported what happened. The United Nations inspections team, called UNSCOM, was not expelled by Saddam Hussein, but rather was withdrawn by Ri...Wisconsin hires Mike Hastings away from Minnesota State

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin has filled its men’s hockey head coaching vacancy by hiring Mike Hastings away from Minnesota State.Athletic director Chris McIntosh announced the hire Thursday. Hastings replaces Tony Granato, who was fired after going 105-129-16 in seven seasons at Wisconsin.Hastings posted a 299-109-25 record at Minnesota State that included consecutive Frozen Four appearances in 2021 and 2022. Minnesota State lost 5-1 to Denver in the 2022 NCAA championship game.“Wisconsin is one of college hockey’s great programs and I am both thrilled and humbled to have this opportunity,” Hastings said in a statement released by the university. “I want to thank Chris McIntosh for his belief in me. Badger hockey has a lot going for it – great alums, fans, facilities, tradition, a terrific campus and city. I can’t wait to get to Madison and start working with our team on building a winning culture on and off the ice.”Hastings’ teams have produced winning records in each of his 25 ...Masters, Yardage and Par

___TikTok propaganda labels fall flat in ‘huge win’ for RussiaWASHINGTON (AP) — Social media platforms often rely on labels to let users know an account is operated by a Russian state propaganda agency. But new research shows on TikTok the labels aren’t very effective even when they’re applied consistently. Analysts at the Alliance for Securing Democracy identified nearly 100 accounts with clear links to Russian state media or propaganda agencies. The analysts found more than a third of the accounts were still unlabeled a year after TikTok announced its labeling program. Even when the labels were added to Russian state accounts, they did little to limit the reach of the propaganda. TikTok says it’ll keep reviewing new accounts and adding labels.___China e-commerce giant Alibaba outlines future strategyHONG KONG (AP) — Top executives of Chinese e-commerce and financial giant Alibaba say it plans to spin off some of its sprawling e-commerce and finance empire as independent businesses...Arcadia Biosciences: Q4 Earnings Snapshot

DALLAS (AP) — In one of the most talked about and highly anticipated matchups in women’s Final Four history, Dawn Staley’s undefeated South Carolina team will face Iowa and dynamic guard Caitlin Clark.Staley and the Gamecocks are looking to become the 10th team to go through a season unbeaten and the first to repeat as champions since UConn won four in a row from 2013-16.The Gamecocks (36-0) have the best defense in the country, which is anchored by Aliyah Boston, and they will face a stiff test against the high-powered offense led by Clark, named The Associated Press Player of the Year, when they play Friday night.Despite the buzz, Staley said her team is focusing on the task at hand.“The juice is in the winning the national championship,” she said. “Our players don’t really care about anything besides that. So we are — again — we’re strong in our beliefs and what we do and how we’ve done things. And at this point, we just want to win, and that’s their approach. DALLAS (AP) — This Final Four is a first for Virginia Tech and coach Kenny Brooks, and he’s set to match wits with a counterpart who beat him by 42 points the last time the two met in March Madness. LSU coach Kim Mulkey won three national championships in four trips to the Final Four with Baylor, but she doesn’t have the bevy of veterans carrying a No. 1 seed into a national semifinal Friday night. That would be Brooks’ bunch.“The No. 1 seed means we belong here,” he said. The seventh-year Hokies coach might not have been thinking that two years ago after a 90-48 loss to Mulkey and the Bears in the second round. But Georgia Amoore is a confident junior now, not the freshman who said she was shaking when Baylor’s DiDi Richards gave her a fist bump to try to boost the young Australian’s spirits after the rout. And Elizabeth Kitley is a dominant senior, Virginia Tech’s all-time leader in points and double-doubles who’s preparing for a high-profile ...Lo que sabemos de las armas utilizadas en el tiroteo de la escuela en Nashville
